That way you don't get overwhelmed after the wedding, and they know that you received their gift. (Sometimes I didn't get thank you cards at all, and I wonder if the gift actually shipped!) And you can just thank people for coming at the wedding itself. No need to send an additional card just to thank them for coming... unless you really want to and have more to say!
